In Islam, honoring your parents is not just a good deed — it’s a command from Allah. Right after worshipping Him alone, the Quran often mentions kindness to parents. That’s how high their rank is in our faith.
Let’s explore their rights and how to fulfill them in both words and actions.
The Quran commands:
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents…”
— Surah Luqman 31:14
Showing love, avoiding harsh words, and lowering your voice when speaking to them are all part of this command.
Even a sigh of annoyance is discouraged:
“…do not say to them ‘uff’…” — Surah Al-Isra 17:23
You are expected to obey your parents, especially in matters of daily life, manners, and family obligations — unless they ask you to disobey Allah.
“But if they strive to make you associate with Me… do not obey them, but accompany them in [this] world with kindness.”
— Surah Luqman 31:15
Making dua for your parents — whether alive or deceased — is a sign of a righteous child.
“My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” — Surah Al-Isra 17:24
It’s a gift that keeps rewarding them in the afterlife and benefits you too.
As they age, the responsibility of care returns to you. Providing emotional, physical, and financial support becomes your duty — just like they once cared for you.
“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy…”
— Surah Al-Isra 17:24
Even after they pass away, Islam encourages you to maintain ties with their loved ones and uphold the relationships they cherished.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best act of righteousness is for a man to uphold ties with his father’s friends after his death.”
— (Sahih Muslim)
Honoring your parents isn’t a phase — it’s a lifelong spiritual responsibility. From daily respect to making dua, Islam teaches us that every act of kindness towards them earns you Allah’s pleasure.
“The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of the parent.”
— (Tirmidhi)
So whether you’re living with them, supporting from afar, or praying for them after they’ve passed — your efforts matter, both in this world and the next.
